On Christmas Eve we had a scare. Our Emmy, who has been with us for over 12 years, was obviously unwell. I called my vet and he said it was an emergency and to get her to the hospital right away. I did, and after a battery of tests we were told that she had a grapefruit sized tumor on her spleen. That was the bad news. The good news is that it was operable. She had her tummy opened up and the tumor was removed and it proved to be benign. We were all so relieved. I know that she is an old dog, but she is in really good shape and should bounce back from this to be even better. I bet on her last year when I bought her a three year dog license. I am counting on another few good years. Emmy is truly a different dog from the other dogs we have had. She has always been reserved, but loving, and very tolerant. She has been Doug's constant companion on his many business trips throughout the west. She has a sixth sense about things, and if she doesn't take to someone, it is usually for good reason. She is very protective and can be unpredictable. She knows her own way, and is usually very good at doing the right thing. However, she is also very independent and can't seem to learn that cows will not hurt us.
But she is on the mend and we are all very grateful for the wonderful vet we had at the hospital.
Oh no! Christmas time is not the appropriate time for scares like that! I'm glad she seems to be doing better, though. On a lighter note, our 12-year old dog, Tosca, was out of sorts a couple nights ago and I panicked that she had bloat. I called our vet and we determined as best we could over the phone that she didn't have bloat but I was on edge watching her for the rest of the night. Later that night, she had a couple of monstrous farts and a potty visit out back and she suddenly felt much better! I was glad it appeared to be something so minor- having older dogs operated on adds stress to an already stressful situation...
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of when Rosie got into the new bag of dogfood and ate all she could. Tera came home and saw her and became alarmed because she was so round! But she was fine the next day. Dogs!
