Emmy 1998-2013
Tera got Emmy to take to college with her, but Emmy had other ideas as she did with almost everything. She fell head over heels in love with Doug, training for his marathons, traveling through out the west with him on business, just being his buddy. I always thought that she was more cat than dog; she refused to learn tricks, rarely came when called, was a very picky eater and had a great pouffy amount of hair to lose in the spring. Emmy was never one to want to get lots of pets, but she would tolerate it if you hugged her and kissed her on the nose. She was feisty, more than once launching herself at bigger dogs only to get bitten right back, once losing a chunk of her ear in the process. As she got older, she just got slower, not less feisty. As of late, she was only taking a walk around the block before getting exhausted. She was losing her ability to walk, her back end refusing to cooperate, her heart giving out. For the last few days she has not been able to walk more than a few paces, and she quit eating and drinking. I called the vet, she agreed that she would not last more than a few days like this, and we agreed to end her suffering. What a wrenching thing to have to do. Doug, Tera and I had it done in her house, on her kitchen bed. We had 15 wonderful years with the most loyal, beautiful and loving friend imaginable. We will miss your independence and the sound of your bark at the back door when you wanted to come in. Good bye sweet Emmy.
I both love and hate these kinds of posts. I love them because Emmy obviously had a wonderful life filled with people she loved and things she loved to do. But I hate that it eventually ends. Much love to you all.
