Happy Birthday Daddy!

Joseph Smith Peery would have been 100 years old today. I miss him, I wish I could talk, argue and cry with him again. He was an original. He always questioned authority, and he was never afraid to change his view if he learned more about a subject. However, he was an agnostic most of his life because he never was able to find enough evidence for the existence of god. Books were always his friends. He spent many hours reading about the descent of man, and the evolution of the human brain. We went on the most amazing adventures together camping, traveling to Europe, exploring the West. His taste for experiencing the world never waned and he infected me and my sister with the same love of adventure and natural history. We learned to appreciate the finer things in life from cut crystal, to fine wine and racy cars. As a professor of Economics and business, he touched many minds and made many students think as they had never done before. Our dinner table conversations were intense, demanding and sometimes way over the top but we always were exposed to new view points and encouraged to learn more. When he died at 95, it was a tough loss, but with the realization that he had had a wonderful life, a life to be savored. I love you very much, daddy dear.
